As part of activities supporting student scientific research and academic development for the 2018–2019 academic year, on the morning of November 3, 2018, at Hall C of Ho Chi Minh City University of Food Industry, the Food Science and Technology Club organized the seminar “Product Development: Perspectives from Experts and Industry.” The session featured presentations by two speakers: Dr. Lê Minh Tâm, lecturer of the Faculty of Food Technology, and Mr. Nguyễn Quốc Dũng, MSc, Head of Quantitative Research and core member of InsightAsia Research Group, together with nearly 300 students from various majors within the Faculty.
The session covered two main topics:
Topic 1: “Market Research Perspective: Think business for product development”
Presented by Mr. Nguyễn Quốc Dũng, representing InsightAsia Research Group.
With extensive experience managing regional research projects and analyzing sensory attributes of products in the Food & Beverage industry, as well as personal and household care sectors, he shared practical and relatable insights about the current market research landscape and the mindset businesses use when developing new products.
This topic helped students better understand market needs and guided them toward making informed decisions when conducting research, developing new products, or choosing the right direction for startup ideas.
Topic 2: “Product development: Bottom-up vs. Top-down approach and Communication”
Presented by Dr. Lê Minh Tâm, lecturer of the Faculty of Food Technology.
With academic training including a Master’s degree in Sensory Evaluation and Consumer Behavior Research and a PhD in Applied Mathematics, along with 10 years of experience in sensory evaluation and its application in new product development and 5 years in data analysis consulting, Dr. Tâm provided valuable knowledge on different approaches to product development.
He helped students gain a deeper understanding of product development trends, market-oriented innovation, and how to position themselves effectively for future research and career growth.
Following the presentations, students enthusiastically engaged in discussions, asking thought-provoking questions to explore more deeply the topics of market research, consumer insights, and product development.
The seminar took place in a lively and energetic atmosphere, giving students the opportunity to directly interact with the speakers on specialized topics. At the end, many students expressed excitement and hoped for more such meaningful and practical sessions to support their academic and professional development.
